I figure it's useful for members to know when I'm not around, for sake of getting help with issues, but I'm strongly considering moving the Introductions board into the Members Only area.

What AVEN does is they have a general LOA thread that's in the announcements part of the board. What you can do is take this thread, move it to members only and turn it into something similar, while leaving the introductions here.

LOA? Please clarify what this is; I'm not familiar with that acronym.
