Hi everyone, I'm Kate, and I think I'm demisexual. I only think about the possibility of sex with someone when there's a serious emotional connection with them. This, unfortunately, leads to me usually falling for friends. The thought of sex with any random person, whether they're considered 'hot' or not, makes me feel ill I find myself thinking 'How can you possibly know how attractive this person is, if you don't know them, and how they think about the world?'. For a while I thought this was just prudishness, but a friend directed me to a definition of demisexual on asexuality.org, and everything sort of fell together. However, I have no idea how to explain this to people. The concept of 'demisexual homoromantic' isn't one most people know. And it leads to some hostility amongst my sexually-inclined friends. So, questions. Am I normal? And is this just me being repressed, or a legitimate orientation? Because I don't know

Other than that, I thought I'd just pop in to say hi I'll probably end up lurking for a bit, but this forum seems great!

I know how you feel. I'm kind of new to all this and I'm still working to find my feet in this new identity, even if it's the only one that's fit properly at all. You absolutely are normal, we all are, we're just different. And I understand the hostility part, too, although for me it was more... open mockery, rather than just hostility.

Demi is a legitimate orientation; "normal" is such a hyperspecific term, determined solely by the perceptions of the person speaking it, as to be functionally completely meaningless. Let's not worry about being "normal," when we can simply be whomever it is we are, eh?
